Scott Spendolini has been working with Oracle APEX since 2002. He was one of the original product managers, left the APEX team, spent years solving real-world problems with APEX – and now he’s back. Why? One of the reasons is APEX Lang. When Scott first saw what the team was building, it reminded him of the early days of APEX: “This is so game-changing and so huge that I can’t not help here.” So naturally, we had a few questions. Quite a few, actually. 😄 At APEX Connect 2026, Scott joined me for a very open conversation about what happened behind the scenes of APEX 26.1, why APEX Lang took longer than expected, what the team learned while building it and where it could take APEX next. We talk about AI-generated applications, Skills, MCP, version control, partial imports, development workflows – and why predicting where AI will be in three years is basically impossible when even a one-year roadmap is difficult. But we also take a critical look at the hype. What happens when generating an application becomes almost free? Do we start building software that is meant to be thrown away? What will developers actually do in the future? And are we solving the right problems with AI – or simply generating more software?
