Our guest today studied Industrial Engineering & Management Science and Innovation Management at Eindhoven University of Technology. After a few years in a traditional corporate environment, he realized that the way most organizations worked simply didn’t make sense to him. In 2016, he quit his job together with Joost Minnaar. They created a bucket list of some of the world’s most progressive organizations and set out to visit and study them. What started as a blog became Corporate Rebels, a global platform and movement dedicated to making work more meaningful, engaging, and human. Over the years, they have studied more than 200 organizations across six continents, including pioneers such as Buurtzorg, Haier, Morning Star, and Semco. Together with his partner he was named one of the Thinkers50 Top 30 Emergent Management Thinkers in 2018 and received the Thinkers50 Radar Award in 2019. He is also the co-author of Corporate Rebels: Make Work More Fun and Start-up Factory, their deep dive into Haier’s radical RenDanHeYi management model. But today, he has taken the experiment one step further. With Krisos, he and his partners acquire traditional companies and transform them into self-managing organizations. Instead of only studying the pioneers, they are putting their own ideas to the ultimate test: real companies, real people, real ownership, and real economic results. For almost nine and a half years now, this podcast has explored the question of how work can empower people rather than weaken them. In more than 570 episodes, we’ve spoken with over 700 guests about what has changed and what still needs to change. How much hierarchy do organizations really need? What happens when control is replaced by trust and distributed decision-making? And can self-management work at scale, not just in exceptional companies, but across the wider economy? One thing is certain: To solve our current challenges, we need fresh inspiration. That’s why we continue to seek out methods, role models, experiences, tools, and ideas that bring us closer to the heart of New Work.
